WISE Kid-Netic Energy Receives 2011 Actua & GE Canada Award for Leadership and Innovation

WISE Kid-Netic Energy is the winner of the 2011 Actua & GE Canada Award for Leadership and Innovation. This award was created as a way to recognize Actua's member organizations that best exemplify the Actua spirit of innovation over a given year. This year, GE Canada and Actua selected WISE Kid-Netic Energy, Actua’s member located at the University of Manitoba, as the 2011 Actua and GE Award for Innovation recipient. 

This award recognizes WISE Kid-Netic Energy for their considerable achievements in 2011 in engaging Manitoba’s youth in innovative science, engineering, and technology programming and excellence in responding to unique community needs; including the much-needed support of communities affected by flooding.

Their commitment and efforts to expand to reach new audiences of youth is making a significant difference in the lives of youth in Manitoba. Their dedication, hard work and commitment to excellence in inspiring youth is contributing to Actua and GE Canada’s shared goal of building a new generation of innovation for Canada.

Congratulations, once again, to the team at WISE Kid-Netic Energy!

Actua's 2012 Winter Conference: A Big Success!


Actua staff and delegates with Lisa Romkey (Senior Lecturer in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning for University of Toronto) at Actua 2012 Winter Meeting Conference in Ottawa, ONActua directors from member organizations located at universities and colleges across Canada converged in our national’s capital for Actua’s 2012 national training conference this January. The theme of the conference “You Matter” focused on helping each stakeholder group recognize how critical their personal contributions are to fulfilling our shared mandate of empowering youth.

Highlights included presentations from: Angela Maiers, social media icon famous for her ‘You Matter TedTalk’; Jennifer MacMillan, The Globe and Mail Communities and Social Media Editor; and a Content Excellence Expert Panel including: Greg Dick, Director of Education Outreach for Perimeter Institute; Lisa Romkey, Senior Lecturer in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning for University of Toronto; and Kay Stephen, Smarter Science Teacher of the Year for Inquiry Based Learning in 2011.

One director shared:

I learned how to be a teacher, a business person and a leader all in four days. This conference has laid a base for me to work from for the remainder of the year and beyond.

Actua would like to extend a big thank you to all the guest speakers, presenters and delegates who contributed to the overall success of the conference!

Future Doctors Learn Ropes

Kivalliq News covers Actua’s Nunauvt Health Careers Camp in Rankin Inlet, 2011. This is one of three camp initiatives that was supported by the Nunavut Department of Health and Social Services and delivered by Actua in partnership with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., Nunavut Arctic College and the Kitikmeot and Kivallik Inuit associations. The goal of the project was to promote health science careers to Inuit youth in Cambridge Bay, Pangnirtung and Rankin Inlet, Nunavut.

Actua Receives $1.25 Million to Promote Science to Underprivileged Youth

On August 17 2011, Peter Braid, Member of Parliament for Kitchener-Waterloo, announced $1.25 million worth of funding on behalf of the Federal Economic Development Agency of Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) to support Actua's science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programming for underrepresented and underserved youth in Southern Ontario. These funds will support Actua's outreach programs at nine universities in Southern Ontario, including Science Quest and Science Discovery located at Queen's University.
